Excursion to the cloud forest of Rosario.

Rosario is a neighbouring community which, like San Antonio, borders with the Cotacachi Cayapas nature reserve. Within Rosario is the magnificent 1500 acre (600 hectare) cloud forest reserve of San Venancio. It is difficult to exaggerate the beauty of this pristine wilderness, with its crystal clear streams, waterfalls and towering forests. Andean bears, pumas, deer, wild goats, turkeys and toucans are just a few of the animals and birds that make their home here.

The circular horse ride or walk to and from San Venancio (12 km total) is a pleasure in itself, passing through woods and beside streams of great beauty, with spectacular views. If you only have time for one overnight excursion during your stay with us, then we recommend this one.

San Venancio is also a fine place for scientific study, and has been described by the British Zoologist David Jackson as “one of the most beautiful places on the planet”.
Timetable
We offer a 2 day excursion, with one night spent within the reserve. Those wishing to stay longer at San Venancio are welcome.

Day 1

  • 07H00    Early breakfast served at the guest house.
  • 08H00    We set off on horseback or on foot for Rosario.
  • 09H30    Arrival at the Ayala´s  pretty farmhouse in Rosario. Refreshments available, and a chance to rest.
  • 10H00    Departure for San Venancio. Soon the meadows and plantations are left behind as we head uphill towards the wilderness. Once on the cloud forest, it is necessary to dismount.
  • 12H30    Arrival at San Venancio. Lunch is served. There is a chance to rest or help your guides to set up the campsite. There is a hut with room for four people. Larger groups are accommodated in tents.
  • 14H30    First tour of San Venancio cloud forest. Expert commentary is provided on the animals, birds and plants of the reserve.
  • 16H30    Return to campsite. Expert instruction and practice is offered in wilderness skills such as the use of the machete to blaze a trial, and the construction of a basic survival shelter.
  • 19H00    Supper is served. A chance to talk and enjoy the frog chorus before bedtime.

    Day two

  • 08H00    Breakfast is served.
  • 09H00    We set of on foot to explore a different part of San Venancio reserve. Your guide will help you to appreciate the wonders of undisturbed cloud forest, where the trunks and branches of the trees are almost completely covered by mosses, orchids, bromeliads and other flowering plants.
  • 13H30    Return to campsite. Lunch is served.
  • 14H00    We set off for San Antonio on a panoramic route which takes us past blue-water streams, woods, plantations and meadows.
  • 18H00    Return to guest-house.
