The Cotacachi-Cayapas nature reserve
For more information on cloud forest, please see FAQ. In the interior of the reserve, little scientific data is available on the vegetation, but surveys at the edges of the reserve have recorded some 2100 higher plant species. Best represented is the orchid family, with 201 species recorded, some unique to the reserve. In August 2008 we were granted formal goverment permission to take visitors into the nature reserve. We are currently the only organization to receive such permission. Properly equipped, and with expert guides, we are now able to offer visitors a unique experience of this pristine wilderness.
We recommend that you hire someone from the local community to carry your pack if your visit is for more than 1 day, as in our opinion you will enjoy the visit much more if free of the weight of your belongings. Please see Organized Activities |

This reserve, established in 1968, currently covers about 240,000 hectares, about 60% of which is untouched cloud forest. It borders and almost surrounds the San Antonio valley. Altitude in the reserve varies from 35 metres to almost 5.000 metres above sea-level; it’s the most ecologically diverse reserve in Ecuador. To see, smell and touch the trees, which are almost completely covered in hanging (epiphytic)plants such as mosses, ferns and orchids is an extraordinary experience.
It is wet! To visit the Reserve, even in the dry season, gumboots are a must, and a waterproof jacket recommended. If you plan to stay overnight in the reserve, a change of clothing is essential, so that you can dry out your clothes over the camp fire.
